The first option is to use wallpaper-tray (sudo aptitute install wallpaper-tray).
It installs an applet in the taskbar displaying a small thumbnail of your current wallpaper. You can switch to the next wallpaper just by clicking on the thumbnail. Directories containing wallpapers must be added. Timed wallpaper change is available, or you can get a new picture on every log-on.
The second option is to use the Gnome Background Changer but this didn't work for me.
